Read the Opening of Book Three — 'Cold Clarity'
The Veil was supposed to be finished.
Kael watched it end in a chamber of glass and blood. He was told, kindly and at length, that when a family bleeds out on its own throne, the throne goes cold.
He was told a great many things.
— An excerpt from Chapter One —
The cavern still remembered him.
It remembered the boy who had come down these tunnels as a stolen infant, wrapped in a moon elf shroud he was never meant to unfold. It remembered the woman who was not his mother, sharpening his blades at dawn, whispering that a weapon is only ever loved by the hand that swings it. It remembered every lesson that had been called a mercy while it broke him.
He remembered too. That was the trouble.
On the night the red moon climbed for the first time in living memory, a banner unfurled from the highest spire of the fortress that should have been quiet. Crimson silk. The old sigil. And beneath it, a voice he had buried with his own hand.
"Come home, Ghost. There is one more scar we forgot to give you."
Pain became instruction. Obedience became survival. Strength had meant holding on — holding pain, holding fear, holding control when every instinct demanded he break. And now, standing at the edge of the same road that had once carried him away in chains, Kael understood something the Veil had never wanted him to learn.
He knew exactly how far he stood from home.
He knew the angle at which the blade would have to enter.
Some scars never fade.
They lead to war.
