Why I Write Broken Heroes

I have never been interested in heroes who are destined to save the world. The characters that stay with me are the ones who were shaped by hands that should not have shaped them, and who have to spend the rest of their lives deciding whether to be the weapon or the person underneath the weapon. Kael is not the chosen one. Kael is the one they made. Selunia is not the wise mentor. She is a woman who has moved past the borders of ordinary magic and chose, for love, to walk back inside them. That, to me, is the story worth telling. Not the destined victory — but the small, impossible choice, made in a doorway, at cost.
