BOOK TWO — CHAPTER PREVIEW

The Shape of Fear

There is a shape that fear takes when it has waited long enough. It borrows a stride. It borrows a smile. It learns the small habits of the people you love, and then it wears them like a stolen coat. By the time you recognize it, you are already inside its house, and the door has closed behind you with the softness of a mother's hand. Kaevra learned this on the morning the ash began to fall. It came without wind, without warning — a slow gray snow that tasted of iron and forgotten names. The village of Hollow Marsh looked up as one, and one by one they began to smile. Not at each other. At something the ash was showing them, behind their own eyes. Kaevra did not smile. She had buried three brothers in a war no one would name, and she had learned to distrust anything that fell from a quiet sky.
